Futsal is a five-a-side indoor soccer game with a five-player team that includes one goalkeeper and four outfield players. Key rules include no offside, a four-second possession limit for goalkeepers and a four-second restart time for kicks, and no throw-ins (kick-ins are used instead). Other rules include unlimited substitutions.
Teams and players
- A team consists of five players on the court: one goalkeeper and four outfield players.
- Teams can have up to 8 players on the roster.
- The goalkeeper must wear a different color jersey than the outfield players.
Gameplay
- Substitutions: Unlimited and "rolling" substitutions are allowed.
- Players must exit and enter the game from the front of their bench.
- No offside: There is no offside rule in futsal.
Goalkeeper rules
- Goalkeepers cannot hold the ball for more than four seconds in their own half.
- The ball can be passed back to the goalkeeper
Restarting play
- Kick-ins replace throw-ins for balls that go out of bounds on the sidelines.
- Goal clearances replace goal kicks; the goalkeeper can throw the ball with their hands from within the penalty area.
- On goal clearances, the keeper cannot throw the ball over the half way line. The ball must the keeper’s side of the court first.
- The opposing team must start at mid court on goal clearances, but once the ball is released from the keeper, then it is live.
- Corner kicks are direct and a goal may be scored from a corner.
- A corner is awarded when the defending team last touches the ball before it goes over their own goal line.
- If a keeper makes a save, they can throw it over the mid court line.
Fouls
- Slide tackles and heavy shoulder charges are not allowed.
- Direct Free Kicks (Physical Fouls: Kicking, tripping, pushing, jumping at, deliberate handling the ball)
- Indirect Free Kicks (Less severe infringements : obstruction, gk handles ball for longer than 4 seconds)
- Penalty Kicks (Direct Free Kick when a defender commits a direct free kick offense inside the penalty area.
***All kicks and goal clearances must be restarted within four seconds.***
